Why the "Plastic" in Plastic Surgery? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The history of plastic surgery reaches
back to the ancient world. Physicians in ancient India including the
great Indian surgeon Susrutha were utilizing skin grafts for
reconstructive work as early as the 8th century BC. His work
Sushruta Samhita describes rhinoplasty and otoplasty.
Despite the popular
misconception, the word "plastic" in "plastic surgery"
does not mean "artificial," but is derived from the ancient Greek
work "plastikos," which means to mold or give form. Plastic surgery
includes both the reconstructive and aesthetic subspecialties.
Many of the
first plastic surgeries were developed to close a difficult wound
or replace tissue lost due to injury or cancer. These procedures often
involved the formation of a skin flap to reshape or mold the defect so
as to approximate the original shape. |

Plastic surgery, is the change,
replacement, or rebuilding of the parts of the body for achieving
cosmetic and functional normalcy. This is a specialized branch of
surgery concerned with the repair of deformities and correction of
functional deficits.
