Breast Capsulectomy Surgery |
| |
| |
When a breast implant is placed the body attempts to wall it off
forming a capsule around the implant. This capsule can be present within a
week after surgery and is eventually present in all breasts containing
implants. The capsule can be of variable thickness and have different
properties from patient to patient and even right breast vs. left breast.
Thicker capsules or those that contain muscle cells can contract misshaping the
breast and in some cases also cause pain with capsule contracture. This
can also occur if a breast implant breaks or ruptures. |

What does Breast Capsulectomy Surgery Involve? |
| |
Currently surgical removal of all or most of the capsule - total or
subtotal capsulectomy - and replacement of the implant's is the usual
course of action. The aim is to allow the body to form a more favorable
capsule and place a new breast implant that should last longer than the older
one.
The method of inserting and positioning your new implant will depend on
your preferences, anatomy and your surgeon's recommendation. However the
implant is normally inserted through an incision made in the natural crease
beneath the breast. It is also possible to make the incision in the armpit or
around the edge of the areola. The incisions are then close by using fine,
dissolving sutures which will also be taped for better support.

Recovery after a Breast Capsulectomy Procedure |
What will happen in the recovery period? |
You will feel tired and sore for a few days and will have slight swelling
and bruising which is only natural. Most of your discomfort will be subsided
with prescription medication. Following the operation you will have a light
dressing in place which will need to be kept dry for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks
your dressing will be removed and the wound inspected and lightly cleaned. The
scars will be firm and pink for at least six weeks and may remain the same
size for several months and it is important to keep in mind that they may take
up to 2 years to fade. You will have follow-up visits in the months after
surgery to check on your progress. |

What is the recovery time from the surgery? |
This will depend on the individual
patient however most patients are able to go back to work after a
couple of days. Although you can walk about and do very light
activities from the next day it is advisable not to do anything
strenuous for 7-10 days. The average recovery time is between 1-2
weeks. |
